Sabrina Vizzari had a wild idea back in the early days of 1993. As a then 20-year-old activities director for the Lake Como nudist resort, she figured she could stage a clothing-optional 5K run along the lines of the successful events held at nudist resorts in her native Washington state.
Thus was born the “Dare to Go Bare 5K,” the first clothing-optional run in Florida. These days there are others, including two produced by Enterprise Media, LLC, the creator of this Web site: the Streak the Cove 5K on May 22 in Kissimmee and the second-annual Caliente Bare Dare 5K on Oct. 9 in Land O’Lakes.
The Dare to Go Bare is still going strong, always held the first Sunday in May, and after a few years of entries dropping to the 100 level, it’s on the upswing. The race drew 150 last year and event director Arlene Reed reports that more than 100 people already have registered for this year’s 19th annual event on Sunday, May 1 at 8:15 a.m. That means the crowd could approach 200 at Lake Como, which is just north of Tampa in Lutz.
Name of Race: Dare to Go Bare 5K and 2.5K Walk
Location: Lake Como Nudist Resort, Lutz
History: The Dare to Go Bare 5K debuted in 1993 and in 1998 drew more than 300 runners due in part to sponsorship from News Radio 970 WFLA. Last year the race drew 150 and is expected to approach 200 this year.
Format: One-loop 5K run held on both dirt trails and asphalt roadways through the 200-acre Lake Como property. Runners can wear as much or as little as they like, though sunscreen and shoes are recommended.
Schwag: T-shirts guaranteed only to those pre-registered by April 19. Post-race reception with three-deep age group awards, male and female. Runners can stay and enjoy Lake Como’s facilities all day.
Signature Feature: Lake Como is one of the nation’s oldest nudist resorts, with five lakes, clay tennis courts, and sand volleyball courts that host regular tournaments.
Projected Turnout: 150 to 200.
Cost: $32, $16 for college students (with ID)
Registration: Via Lake Como’s Web site
Quote: “We’re expecting a big turnout, including the woman who has won several times over the last nine years” – Arlene Reed, race director

We’re proud to be organizing the clothing-optional Streak the Cove 5K at the Cypress Cove Resort on Sunday, May 22. You might not think a clothing-optional 5K is for you, but we had terrific response to our inaugural Bare Dare 5K at the Caliente Resort & Spa near Tampa in October. Nearly 200 runners competed and almost 40 percent were female, which is higher than the 35 percent female rate at a typical 5K.
We shot this promo video at Cypress Cove yesterday. You’ll hear from Sabrina Vizzari, who while serving as an activities director for the Lake Como Resort as a college student launched the Dare to Go Bare 5K race, which is still held the first Sunday in May. Whit Lasseter, who like Sabrina serves as a co-host of our Fitness Buff Show, talks about her first nude running experience; she was the first female finisher of the Bare Dare as well as our first Endurance Sports Florida Enduring Athlete of the Month.
