Our New Mix1 Ad

By Pete Williams

We attended a Mix1 reception this evening on the eve of the start of St. Anthony’s Triathlon weekend. Dr. James Rouse, company founder, chief evangelist, and high-performance living expert was on hand after appearing on our Fitness Buff video webcast earlier in the day. What an inspiration guy. Check out his Website HERE.

We filmed a brief commercial for Mix1 at the Escape from Fort DeSoto Triathlon two weeks ago. Thanks to Eric Hall and Liza Palas Geist for contributing.

Mixing it Up with Mix 1

By Pete Williams

For more than a decade companies have tried to come up with the right mix for post-workout recovery. There have been some decent protein powders, but by the time you get to the blender the window for fueling your muscles often has closed. As for RTDs (ready to drinks) they’re often little more than chocolate milk.

The folks at Mix1, launched from Boulder, Colorado in 2006, have found the happy, well, mix. The all-natural protein shake has a 2-to-1 carb to protein ratio that’s ideal for both pre-workout and post-workout recovery – or as a meal replacement. Unlike other drinks in the category that are kidney-crushing protein bombs, Mix1 has only 15 grams of protein – 10 for its lighter version. As someone who has dealt with a kidney stone from overdosing on protein powders, I’ll never drink anything with a higher protein content again.

We chatted with Mix1 founder Dr. James Rouse during this week’s show, along with Mix1-sponsored athletes Megan Wallin (volleyball) and Marco Hintz (triathlon).

Race of the Week: Shark Bite Challenge

By Pete Williams

It’s not often you find a race for $20 that offers an hour-long event, a dry-fit shirt, post-race food and entry to one of America’s finest beaches, which is waiving the usual $8 parking fee.

That’s all part of the package for the Shark Bite Challenge, formerly the Caladesi Kayak Challenge, which includes two days (April 16-17) of paddle races. If you can paddle it, you’re pretty much in. Not surprisingly, a large stand-up paddleboard (SUP) contingent is expected for Sunday. There’s even free beer involved during the pre-event welcome and early registration at the Dunedin Brewery from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 15.

The race is organized by Karen Mirlenbrink, owner of the Dunedin Pilates Studio and an accomplished paddler who recently put us through a Pilates routine on The Fitness Buff Show (see video below).

Name of Race: Shark Bite Challenge

Location: Honeymoon Island State Park, Dunedin

History: The Shark Bite Challenge is a fundraiser for the Friends of the Island Parks, a non-profit, citizen support organization that supports the efforts of Caladesi and Honeymoon Island State Parks.

Format: Two-day event kicks off Saturday, April 16 with a nine-mile, 6-man outrigger canoe race. The following day, there’s a 4-mile and an 8-mile kayak, canoe, surfski, OC1, SUP, and prone paddleboard race.

Schwag: The Shark Bite Challenge works in conjunction with the Island Earth Days festival. With registration, all racers receive a dry-fit t-shirt, lunch, and VIP seating at the festival – guaranteed to first 75 registrants. Mention the Shark Bite Challenge upon entering the park and your $8 parking fee will be waived.

Signature Feature: Honeymoon Island and Caladesi Island are consistently rated among America’s most beautiful beaches.

Projected Turnout: 100-plus

Post-race: Lunch, VIP seating at the festival

Cost: A bargain at $20 per day or $30 for both days. (One shirt only)

Sign-Up: Via Active.com

Examining the InGREEDients

By Pete Williams

Like many parents, David Burton is concerned about what his daughter eats. But he didn’t just read labels and wonder, he went out and made a documentary about it.

The result is the terrific film InGREEDients. Burton, a registered nurse and first-time filmmaker, discovered an alarming connection between diet and illness while investigating trans fats and hydrogenated oils in America’s food supply. Do you know what a partially hydrogenated oil is? What does zero grams of trans fat per serving really mean?

The award-winning documentary features interviews with medical doctors, natural health doctors, scientists and researchers, politicians, journalists and the lawyer who successfully stood up against two corporate giants whose products are household names across America.

We talked with Burton on The Fitness Buff Radio Show when the film was released two years ago and visited with him again this week on the online television version of the program. Watch it here.
